I own Wings Of War but didn't play it very often. It's essentially a very light Blue Max played with plane cards handled like miniatures on a flat surface. The plane cards are beautiful and clear, but you need to be very cautious with moving them because the flight direction is printed directly on the plane card. This is to me the main con of this game, but it can be easily countered with a felt mat and a bit of carefulness during the movement. The combat is almost completely random, as you draw result cards that can range from 0 damage points to the explosion of the target plane, but we are already used to random results here with BM. It's a pity that there isn't any location of damage points, but only a max damage capacity which can result in the shooting down of the plane when reached. WOW is a fair start for beginners and children, as the ruleset is short and easy and the plane cards are varied, historically precise and colourful, but IMHO it isn't very challenging when played with only 2-4 planes on a common table surface. I see it potentially much more fun with more planes on a larger surface (like the floor) and with plane miniatures, but the card play (you must choose three maneuver cards each turn for each plane and then play them in succession in three separate contemporary move/combat impulses) could slow down dramatically the game. Maybe a formation movement rule could help greatly with speeding up in large games.
