Now that observers can shoot, I was wondering if there is a limit on how much they can shoot. I think observers may be too strong otherwise because it is so much easier for them to get shots.

If the Blue Max ammunition rules as written are too difficult to do, I would like to see either:

1) A "-1" modifier applied to all shots by observer guns (and SE5a & Nieuport17) in addition to any deflection penalties or
2) A 10 shot limit for those guns. I think the rules give these guns 20 points of ammo each and if all shots are medium burts (2points each), that works out to 10 shots. It may be necessary to have shots wherethe fire value is 0 or less not count against this limit so that all the ammo doesn't get wasted on shots that have no chance of hitting.

I am quite sure that observers are far "too strong" in this version of Blue Max. Look at the play results of games with two-seaters. If a two-seater can stay alive, it has a very high probability of winning its game, mostly due to the gunner constantly getting low value shots.

Your point #1 is good, for observers, but shouldn't penalize forward firing guns. These were just as accurate as belt-fed guns. Also, until late war, they had a higher effective rate of fire than belt-fed guns.

For #2, it shouldn't be that hard to implement four magazines of five boxes. Just allow that an observer doesn't fire if there is no chance to hit.

The issue really isn't one of 'accuracy', it's about time. The time involved, one turn, to remove the empty ammo cannister and replace it with a full one. That along with the fact you can run out of ammo with those guns in a long game. An algorithm probably should be added, to be fair, that would allow the pilot to override the shot of the observer to conserve ammo. Because the Bristol has the largest fuel load in the game, it tends to be involved in longer games. If the observer runs out of ammo, the Bristol becomes a big, slow moving, unmaneuverable N17. A real dork of a plane and generally a dead man!

Also, I bet that as you play more against a Bristol (or Halb), you'll develop new tactics to defeat them. You need to do things a little different against them to succeed. The only scenario in this game that is totally even is the Camel vs. Camel one. Good luck!
