chits are drawn after each shot... rules rulez.
Nick.
I think the question and the answer need a little clarifying.
Previously, if I remember correctly, the way that damage was allocated to an individual plane here on YouPlay.it was that the amount of damage was determined by the computer. Then, the first "damage chit" was "selected" by the computer, recorded as damage on that plane, and then the damage chit would be returned to the "counter mix." If the plane suffered more than one "hit," additional damage chits would be selected pursuant to the above routine, that each individual damage chit would be drawn from the counter mix as a whole and then promptly returned to the counter mix. Pursuant to this routine, a plane could receive the same exact damage chit in one burst from a single opponent.
This duplication of a damage chit was apparent when a plane took two or more "Pilot Killed" or "Plane Explodes" damage chits in the same burst, even though there are only one of each damage chit in the counter mix (assuming that the second "PK" chit, the one with PK on both the R and B sides, was removed from the counter mix as suggested in the Rules).
According to the Blue Max Rules, when selecting damage chits inflicted on your plane from a single opposing plane, the pilot first draws chits representing any B's and then, without returning the B's to the counter mix (and their corresponding R side), draws chits for any R's inflicted. He then returns all of the chits to the counter mix. For example, if a plane takes a BRRR, the pilot would randomly select one B, record that damage, and then randomly select three R's, recording that damage. He would then return all four of those chits to the counter mix. If another plane(s) had fired on his plane that turn and also inflicted damage on his plane, the pilot would repeat the process outlined above until all damage bursts have been resolved or his plane went down.
The system of not returning B's and any previously drawn R's to the countermix when receiving and recording damage from a single opponent's burst has the effect of lessening the chances of receiving the dreaded PK/PE chits in one way: If the B Chit drawn for a damage result that has both a B and R chits is the "Pilot Grazed" chit, then that pilot can't get the "Pilot Killed" chit because the PK R damage result is on the flip side of the Pilot Grazed B chit and that damage chit has not been returned to the counter mix just yet for possible selection. The B flip side of the Red "Plane Explodes" damage chit is another "Pilot Grazed" fuselage hit. Something to think about the next time you receive a "Pilot Grazed" damage chit.
Same is true for the B Smoke/R Fire Damage chit.
On a side note, if anyone would like a table detailing the fronts and backs of the damage chits from my copy of Blue Max, just send me an email and I will be happy to send that table to you for your reference.
