Message text I like your idea, but I would be a little more draconian and say 5 consecutive straights, or better yet, consecutive 2S2/2S1s would allow the pilot to clear the jam.
Let us not forget, there were several type of aircraft where the breech of the gun was not accessable by the pilot, therefore if it did jam, you were SOL until the ground crew could get at it. The Bristol F2b was one such aircraft. The port gun on the N28 was pretty much unreachable in combat, and the Lewis gun on the SE5 was also supposedly very difficult to clear while flying as well. Just to name a few.
On the other side, there were pilots who spent the night before their patrols hand inspecting their ammunition to avoid jams.
