Here is the dialogue for the two game. I seperated it into upwind and downwind version for easy reference.

Against the wind version (Upwind)

It's not automatic -- the computer rolls a die for each collision. On a 1-3, they foul. After that, each ship needs to role a 1-2 to UNfoul, so it can take a while. Make sure you're "Unfouling" list is set to "all" or "friend". You can set that to "none" if you want because there are times you don't want to unfoul. Reply

It's not firing -- that just shows both broadsides were fired at some point but the left was never reloaded. A ship can fire both sides in the same turn, but can only reload one side per turn. You can set which side with the "Load" pulldown list. Reply
