Anyway, I posted a pretty full explanation on a thread with the distinct title.
Actually, we CAN "bet" on horses in Arkansas. There is a nice track outside of Hot Springs that has a "season" for a few months in the spring.
But it should be clear now that there was no typo- the phrase is "beating a dead horse," not "betting a dead horse" (altho that is pretty interesting in its own way and sounds like my flying for the past few scenarios...)
We don't have "flogging" in the US-- haven't you UK guys realized that we declared independence to get away from that? (Oh, and to get away from the bad wigs too-- awful things!)
