This is the relevant line from the rules:
• If an aircraft is fired upon from directly to its front, all tail hits become engine hits. If it is fired upon from directly to its rear, all engine hits become tail hits. I think that's pretty clear. If it was applied in the situation where I just got shot down, the tail hit should have been applied to my engine (or the tail damaging chit should have been swapped for an engine damaging chit, or whatever). |
