I thought I'd suggest a variation on the rules, that wouldn't work as an actual boardgame but should be possible on this site.

The basic suggestion is not to show all planes on the map to each pilot.

Only show the icons for planes (that relative to the player's plane) are not in the hexes that would be 'rear firing arc (extended to edge of board) & blindspot'

That would simulate only being able to see out the front and sides of the plane.

Planes with a living observer should see planes in every direction except the blind spot

If you have fire - perhaps you don't get any planes displayed (or maybe just range 1?)

If you have smoke perhaps you just get to see normally but 'not front firing arc' (or maybe just to range 3?)

These airplanes had open cockpits to all sides and back. Just turning your head and shoulders you could see behind. I know I would want to know where all my enemies were and would be looking around. You may miss something in the heat of battle but generally there is no physical blind spot except down and the wings.
My two cents.

Ny blindspot I really just meant that hex immediately behind the plane that rear guns can't shoot at.

That these planes had open cockpits is a good point, but (I imagine) it's still a bit of a strain to fly while you're craning your neck around - so presumably most pilots looked forward, right and left, (plus up and down) with a small area (more or less behind them) being basically unseen except intermittantly.

Edward

Right behind you is your must vulnerable spot! You better believe I'd be checking it ALL the time. Still holds today; ever watch Top Gun?

It's difficult to shoot at someone in front of you if you're looking over your shoulder - Maverick had Goose as an 'observer' - and yes I understand you "want" to check behind you all the time, but if you were driving (in let's say a Bond style car chase) and didn't have mirrors on your car how often would you be able to look right behind you?
Anyway the actual situation is not relevant as such - the question is more about whether it would make for an interesting tweak to the rules or not.

My vote is: "Not".

I agree with Bombadil of the NO.

Not sure about the others. For myself in big or small battles, I can only care what is going go within few hexes of my plane. Something that is going on far away have no concern to me unless they come closer. More often than not I am target fixated on what I am tailing or can shoot at next turn.
