I assume that you are referring to the "Paydirt" football game that was produced, if memory serves me, by Avalon Hill.
Years ago, the games club that I belonged to had a series of "Paydirt" seasons, wherein each participant would take a number of teams for a given real life NFL season and would play all the games for that NFL team for that particular season, etc., with standings, rankings for points allowed/scored, the whole nine yards as it were. I think the first season we recreated was the 1978 NFL season, with seven people playing, each person taking four teams each. If one of your teams played another one of your teams, someone would sit in as "head coach" for one of your teams and it was game on. In subsequent seasons, there was enough interest that we had 14 people playing, each person having one team in each league. One season that was recreated, one particular player who was ungodly lucky and fortunate with the dice in that game, won both the NFC and AFC Championships, so he was playing himself in the super bowl... Not a whole lot of spectators for that game.
