I did. He just said play. Look around. Be a good pilot. Challenge people. So that's what I'm doing. Hope I'm doing well.

Yep, you're doing well. Bear in mind that I was asked when I had some 200-300 games under my belt. Leagues are your friend for getting experience quickly and becoming more visible to fellow pilots.
Don't join too many leagues at one time and read the description of a league before joining. Most league will start and you get a minimum of 9 games and maximum of 25 games per league; median around 16 games.
A lot of the public leagues expect fast daily movers. The trend lately is newbie joining many leagues and ended up in slow play, or worse automoving. That will put a bad mark against your name quickly. docmortand has a weird work schedule that allows him almost full-time access to YouPlayIt to handle nearly 200 games at one time. Some of us will wait for the majority of the spots in a league to fill up before joining them inorder to avoid such slow and new players.
Regular league games are slightly different from squadron games. In regular league games you are trying to win for yourself. For squadron games you're playing for the team. Squadron practices in private (passworded) league sometimes.
