So if you get the 3 starter kits this gives you all the necessary items to play ASL or is the original anchor size rule book required?

I'm not sure. Starter kits seems to give you the basics, anyway every kit add/evolve some rules, so basically SK1 & SK2 manage differently some identical situation.
I managed to "learn" most of infantry rules, with the help of some kind player. About the time spent... you don't think that it's so much In fact, you can start a scenario and play it an hour in the evening, then save it, and restart another day, with the same opponent.
VASL is going to give ASL a new youth : easy to find player, easy to setup, user-friendly&cool interface, very thrilling games and tactical situations.
