| Message text i dont share your opinion about free speach being dead...but then you knew i wouldnt
free speech is perhaps our most coveted freedom...it allows each and everyone of us to speak our minds without fear of repression or persecution...it allows us the freedom to develop and enhance the democratic freedoms that we have all fought so hard to achieve and maintain
but with the freedom comes a great responsibility...
you have the right to free expression...but that right does not extend to allowing you to trample upon the rights and freedoms of others...it does not allow you to make racist statements...it does not allow you to make sexist statements...it does not allow you to demean someone else's religion or attack their sexual preferences...in short...your right of free speech has a considerable number of limitations placed upon it
it is a sad fact that that those most intent upon exploiting others...pornographers...anarchists...
terrorists etc are the first to turn to Free Speech to give themselves license to spew their hate...
JohnHawker...what is your stance on child pornography ? do you agree that the most helpless citizens of the world should be exploited so that someone else can make profit through that exploitation ?
what about the Muslim extremists in your own country...should they be allowed to preach hatred in their mosques...should they be allowed to recruit suicide bombers...should they be allowed to teach their followers how to make bombs that will kill innocent people...your fellow countrymen
how do you feel about those who wish to murder Jews or homosexuals...should they be allowed to post their hatred...should they be allowed to air their beliefs
just a few examples for you to ponder
for my own part JohnHawker i am on the other side of the fence...i have spent a good part of my career protecting your civil liberties...making certain that you can enjoy them in peace and safety...my work has helped to topple tyrants and been instrumental in running terrorists to ground
...it was my section here at CSIS that helped the police in your country to gather the evidence that convicted the subway bombers...and yes...i would have to say that we trampled on some of their rights in order to do so
i have great respect for the rights of all citizens and have sworn to protect them to the best of my ability
but then...as you say...i am an idiot
