After yesterday, USA should not comment about how other countries / places conduct their business when it comes to democracy and handling of protests.
I wouldn't be so hard on US. IMVHO, there are two fenomena that US never experienced: one is war on homeland (after Civil War). The second is fascism, in the wide sense of "autocracy". In Europe, almost all countries have experienced fascism, directly or indirectly. The nearest thing US experienced close to war was 9/11, close to fascism was McCarthy.
Point is: US didn't develop antibodies against fascism. Now, hopefully, this mild case of fascism can help develop them.
But, there's a "but", IMHO is paramount US doesn't hide behind the "that's not America" meme. This is negation, the most dangerous thing. Face it: this is America, one of its uglier facets but nonetheless it is. Now, many countries in EU (especially Italy and Germany) had their noses rubbed in, had to look at that frightening mirror and realize: "That's me. I didn't know, I don't like it, but that's one of my faces".
Now, USA, it's your turn. Good luck.
P.S. Please leave "human nature" out. "Human nature", by social sciences, is pure bullshit. |
