It's always been an unwritten rule about communication. When we did the first squadron tournament we had a penalty for any squadron who broke the communication rule (a deduction of 5 league points I think it was) but we never had to use it - because 99.9% of players are honourable
If you look at squadron games you'll see that lots of chat does happen, but it's never "tactical". So, you might say "that's good formation flying" or "two down, one to go" or "let's get 'em" or "stick to me like glue" etc. I've seen some pilots apologize to each other too - this is all accepted as being OK.
I've never seen someone say something like "turn left now", which would be classed as cheating .
Everyone prides themselves on honour, and at the end of the day it's only a game. It's never totally competitive. If you win, you win. If you lose, so what?
