At the Marco Polo's times Genoa and Venice were two indipendent Republics in competition between them. Once back from China Marco Polo was involved in a war with Genoa. Genoa won, Marco Polo was on a sunked ship and got POW. Anyway few americans know that Marco Polo went in prison. Some more know that he existed.
Right. But Venice is also Italian. That way he was Italin and went to an Italian prison. There were also several other countries in Italy at that time. The Papal State, Sicily, Tuscany, Romagna to name a few. Let me correct you. Romagna has never been an indipendent state, it has been only part of the Pope's State. Anyway, in that period, they were different states, not Italy. |
