It's a VM on one of my personal servers.
Azure/AWS is waaaay too expensive for a hobby. Cloud computing is NOT cheaper than doing it yourself, just easier.
This is one of my older, yet still very powerful, servers. Perfect for my hobby stuff.
After this upgrade this particular server will have dual Xeon 2620s (12 cores), 64G of ram, 20TB of spinning disk and 2TB of SSD. Power is supplied by a 2500W UPS giving about 30 mins of runtime in case of a power failure which are rare and usually very short. (I've also a generator in case there are longer issues. Bought it after hurricane Sandy and have never had to use it, yet.)
The connection is a business class Verizon fiber connection. Normal traffic to this site is less than 1Mbps. I've run MMO servers off this connection for hundreds of concurrent users with no lag.
The VM this is running on is currently allocated 2 cores and 8G of ram. I'll be increasing it to 4 cores and 16G after the upgrade. (SQL is a pig unless you restrict it but the more mem you can give it, the better response time you'll get..) I think it's allocated about 150G of SSD - it doesn't need much.
In case anyone's wondering, I've been in this business since the early 80's doing all aspects of IT. Development, systems, networking, and security. |
