There have been a few WSIM tournaments, at least one individual one I can remember and one with teams of two or three (due to scenario limits).

One person would keep track of the games, assignments (who's English or French, etc), points, etc. I thought it was a lot of fun. Some teams even had "signal flags" -- a code they could send over the in-game chat to communicate secretly.

There have also been some team challenges more recently. There are no formal WSIM teams on the site, just groups playing against each other.

But yeah, I agree with Hubert about waiting until Electro has a handle on things. If the advanced rules ever go live, we should definitely christen them with a tournament!
