Message text Just caught this review from the yahoo canvas eagles web site....
This is a quick overview of the movie FLYBOYS. First, there is a very light love story in there, which your wife will most likely not find overly entertaining. For us, the dogfighting scenes and plane types used in the movie are most important. The scenes are pretty good, visually, but when it comes to plane types, you may be disappointed. The Allies fly the Nieuport 17, and you'll see a couple Bristol F2.b fighter on the ground as well as an SE-5a. There are also a pair of Handley Page 0/400. Apart from the Nieuport 17's, the only other plane you will see in the air for the Allies is the Sopwith 1¸ Strutter, which is used as a trainer...
For the Prussians/Germans, it would appear only the Fokker Dr.I was available, and except for one black plane, they are all red... There is a scene with Gotha III's (or IV's?) and a Zeppelin (N32).
The movie gives a good feel as to the attrition rate, they've also added unrealistic tracers so it's easier to see where the bullets are going (a nice touch IMHO).
I was disappointed at the training, as it was way too short, and was not anywhere near what the French did in those days (French and German pilots received the best training in those days). The pilots had to learn to maneuver the plane on the ground, in a plane with clipped wings, and using a jump in the middle of the field to get airborne for a few seconds. There is none of that here, they just take off and land. Still, there is only so much which can fit in 120 minutes worth of film...
All in all not a bad movie, but disappointing from a historical perspective.
Cheers, Denis
