When you receive damage, you are shown exactely the damage chits you draw; after this step, the "directional hit" rule is applied (e.g. on a head on, damage to the tail goes to the engine instead).
The problem rises when you draw a special damage which is "transformed" because of directional hit: in your case, I just suppose you drew a B chit which (even if giving fusolage damage) affected directly the tail (e.g. "rudder jams..."), which has been transformed in the corresponding special damage to the engine.
So, the damage you received to the fusolage just turned to the engine, but there is no trace for that.
Honestly, I don't remind if there is a tail special damage chit dealing damage points to fusolage, so your case may also be a "real" bug, but I've experienced that many players have been "deceived" by the way damage taken is shown...
