Yep, but in Il-2 (my favourite FS) there aren't heavy armed bombers and in many cases a tail approach is good enough
BTW I also crashed chasing fighters when the stupid AI tryes a stall (or similar low speed maneuver) when I'm too close to it's tail

Anyway, on Red Baron (WW1) there are only slow, sluggy 2-seaters. I know how it feels. After a little I learned (the hard way down): after you're on his tail, cut engine FIRST. And also, in this case, a low approach puts you under its tail (observer out of game) and you have room for a quick nose-up to loose speed.
