I notice a number of people complaining about other players who 'retire with honour' after just shooting a little into the lead and then running

If you go at the end of the rules ( http://www.youplay.it/play/bm_GameRules.asp ) you will see that you can retire with honor by exiting from your side of the map once you can meet any of the following three condition:

* Almost without fuel, with less than 3 fuel left in your tank
* Without engine, i.e. engine completely destroied
* Having all your guns destroyed.

If you can see any further improvement, tell it.
Then, if someone wants to flee earlier ... i don't mind. If he keeps fleeing I stop playing with him.

Being a relatively new player and not having played any league games I can only comment on the regular games. I would prefer to see whoever is left on the map at the end of the game gets credit for the win. This would make no difference then whether a player retired with honor or not. If multiple friendly players are on the board at the end then they would all get credit for the win not just the one with the most points. This would help encourage team playing since you are no longer trying to rack up the points. Players might be willing to play wingman and cover someone's back more instead of trying to get the points themselves.

Problem with that is it strongly favors the planes with the bigger fuel tanks. Also, instead of working as a team to shoot down the enemy, it may become a game of chase and avoidance to improve your chances of being in the air at the end.

That's the thing with loopholes - you close one, and three more open up. Changing rules to address undesireable opponents is not the solution - avoiding those opponents is.
