Three things you should do, 1) read the rules; 2) read the newbies guide; 3) talk to people using the chat box down the bottom as you play - some folks will help you, others will ignore you (which is sometimes due to a language barrier).
Avoid "Basic Rules" games, as there are still a number of nasty bugs out there involving melee.
Also, a point of gaming etiquette; NEVER surrender until your opponent has scored at least one victory point against you.
