Freddie just did this in a game I was in (http://www.youplay.it/play/bm_GameMove.asp?GameID=455817 and I was within 10pts of a win with the leader already eliminated. Unfair? I suppose it could be argued but I didn't feel cheated. He was outgunned 9-1 and outnumbered 7-1. He wasn't being a coward or cheap, he was saving his butt in the same manner his real-life counterpart would have likely done it.

Retiring without honor when it gives you the win is not a good play, that is IMHO a cheap win that in unfair to the other players. Sticking around when you have no chance of victory and little chance of survival, only to possibly impact the standings by who gets the pleasure of shooting you down, could be easily argued as kingmaking. It should be a personal decision for the player decide if they are playing a simulation or a mere game. For me, it is often a weighing of whether I can put up a respectable fight or not and if I can take someone with me. In the example I gave, I think it would be unfair to criticize freddie for acting sensibly and retiring early.

Personally, I think this would be less of an issue if points were halved no matter how you retired, unless it was with honor (no engine or guns). Most of the time, it is case-specific and situational though.

Generally speaking retiring with honour (no engine or fuel and on own side) or forced retiring through rudder damage etc are both acceptable.

It is also possible that planes automove off the board. This happened in one game of mine recently when I was away for three days. This is not ideal but sometimes unavoidable.

Otherwise retiring is not good especially if playing in a league or multi-player games as this is unfair on the other players. Please note though that it is not always possible to identify rudder damage moves as you will not see the damage displayed if the last turn that took the enemy plane off the board was the last one restricted.

I know that it's good play to retire when it means you can win the game.

But just now i watched as a person retired and had no chance of winning.

the top 3 were all out, 3 were left, and they were placed either below or above the retiree.

Whenever im in that situation i just fly around and try to get some points..or "donate" my plane to who-ever's good enough to get me.

I find that retiring when one cant win is almost sour grapes and shows that a person really takes this too seriously.

has anyone else seen this?

excluding damages that make not retiring impossible..i.e. left turn only, on border..can only go off map...
