Like my nick say, I like the "instant kill" chits for more than one reason. The fist reason is that in Word War First flying and fighing on something made of light wood and fabbric is a very dangerous activity. Many real pilots are killed from a single bullet, this is simply the way this dogfights are made.
Here my 2cents:

Any pilot skills will tend to make the stronger players even stronger
The "instant kill" chits are a great way to equalize this situation. Think about a novice agaist a triple ace. Novice had his chance to shot down the great ace !!! How may duels agaist novices can stand a super ace before beeing shot down ? Who will be the (lucky?) novice who shot he down ? This is another reason why I like "instant kill" chits ... they equalize fights and are a drammatic props too ...
If there is a chance of being "Pilot Killed", there are no such thing as (like you say) "beating up on the new kid" ... The new kid is not such "easy kill" because he can also kill you

Why risk your star pilot when facing somebody better than you?
Because you must. In the real Word War First you have to fly and fight even if you hare ace pilot. There are non such things like Duty Turns and Leave Shore that time and place ...
I think that if a player have a pilot with ace status and choose to not use him, he have to pay for this. My idea: an ace pilot have only a limited "I refuse" option, (something like 2 o 3 option for every ace or ace level). Every time the player want to save the ace, he can use one "I refuse figh" option. When all the options are spended, the ace must fight or be retired from game.
Another possible option: a player can choose to retire the ace (the ace is alive but cannot fight anymore) or must risk the ace in fight. Can an ace roster be a good idea ?

When would the skills apply?
IMHO the only way to use an ace (and permit the developmet of aces) is trough a campain game (may scenarios in a row using the same pilots). Every pilot start like novice and accumulate experience to become ace, if he survive and/or shot down someone else. New replacement pilots will be novices.
An intresting variaton can be this: replacement pilots start a scenario start having the same esperience as the average of surviving pilots. This only a rough idea to be developed: you have to define and track down the "esperience" level of the pilots and so on ... |
