there was a First World War...the Germans were the enemy and the Americans DID actually fight in it
As I'd like to say, most of Americans (and Canadians too) who fights in WWI were native French and Britains, who just come to protect land they were born.
P.S. No offense, and I'm glad that I now have a job in Canadian inc. =)
I would note that the majority of U.S. troops in World War I were born in the U.S. and undoubtedly cared far more for their own homeland, than for their Europen origins (if they even thought of those). I also think the many hundreds of thousands of U.S. soldiers of German, Scandanavian, and Irish descent (just to mention three other nationalities) might take some serious exceptions to your representation.
My great grandmother and her immediate family came over just prior to WW1. They were fleeing the Kaiser and Prussian way of life. When the americans entered the war her brother went as a doughboy. Her other brother was pressed into service on the German side. so they didn't fight to defend the homeland. On that side they fought because they had to and on this side he fought because he wanted to beat the Germans.
