Last week I was staying at a friend's place in Istanbul (wonderful city, btw). In the bathroom they had this nice model they used to hold towels. I was wondering if anyone can identify the model from this shitty picture I've taken: http://www.takeaplay.net/images/private/icam0009.jpgbtw, you cannot see it from the picture, but it is a two-seater.
Based on British markings, a radial engine, a two bladed propeller, and fuselage struts, this looks a little like either a Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter or (ignoring the fuselage struts) an Avro 504 (J or later series). However, the "N" wing struts are incorrect, the engine cowling is not shaped right, the wings do not have the correct stagger, and the tail has the wrong shape and supports. Almost certainly, this is an artistic creation from the second half of the 20th century which combines the attributes of a number of aircraft, and a severe lack of knowledge of historic planes. In addition to the issues listed above; the spacing of the wings is proportionally too great for any biplane, the location of the back spar in the outer wing struts would interfere with the working of the lower ailerons, and, perhaps the most telling, it appears to have a tail wheel which is proportionally quite large. Tail wheels were rare on most single engine aircraft until just before the Second World War, and when used they tended to be small. |
