There's no perfect answer to this question as there are many variables which could move the needle one way or the other on this.
For example, if your team outnumbers the other side significantly, then using a long burst is a more viable option, as even if you're out of the fight with a jam, your pals can hopefully cover you - and the extra damage you might get in could cripple the enemy plane, so he can be finished off more easily.
If you're out of fuel and gliding near your own edge, you may not have the chance to get off more than a single shot before you leave, so a long burst could do a bit more damage to a foe making them more vulnerable to your team mates still in play.
