hello
I'll put it simply:
I think that the shorter 5-days time out in the preferences when creating a game is still too long.
You are brand new to this site or you would remember the failure that was the three days limit before the you get auto-moved. Nor you can't remember the ocean of unfinished games that there were before the introduction of auto-mover.
I live you with these reflection:
1) A 3 days limits takes you to be auto-moved for a week end out.
2) A 5 days takes you to be auto-moved for a week of vacation.
3) A lot of players dislike ending auto-moved for the previous two reasons.
4) It is easier that the people identified in point 3 quit playing on tis site.
Personally I never join games with an auto-move limit of less of 7 days. Since I'm not the only to do it several of these games doesn't start at all while they would have we a 7 days limit.
I leave you another reflection.
I never join games with free placement. Several times I opened the same scenario with standard or area placement 3 times on 4 my games start before the ones with free placement.
it's amazing how, surely due to my poor English, I'm unable to explain my suggestion.
The only thing I do not need (as I have not asked an opinion) is the reason why my suggestion would be useless or wrong. But thank you anyway.
I understand there are players that dislike automoves and do not need a short time-out because they want the righht to disappear for 6(or even 13) days, and still have their move and opponents waiting for him. More power to them.
I'm just suggesting to give an "option" (is it clear enough the word "option"?) for quick games when ALL PLAYERS AGREE to have quick games, or for Tournaments where players joining the Tournament AGREE in advance to have a 24h time-out time failing it an auto-move acts.
No harm for those that fear the stress of a daily-move, they wil continue to play only 7 or 14 days time-out games, but a quota of players could find useful this added option.
I leave the forumites another reflection. The site was first created many years ago. More people have tablets and smartphones in 2015 than in early 2000's. Nowadays it's easy make a move during the wait at the Doctor's shop or while in Metro. So, perhaps, more people is ready for quick games than 10 years ago.
Thank you to all that have responded
One problem with shorter, 3-5 day, timeouts is invariably you have instances of players who signup without really reading/considering the settings and then get into automove mode. Once that kicks in, they are automoved as soon as everyone elses moves are in, even if it's less than the normal timeout limit.
Another is when a rookie to the site signs up for a whole raft of games, then either misses as in case above, or gets bored and stops playing, and ends on automove.
Particularly in league games, other players usually hate automovers as it normally screws over whichever side they happen to be flying on and skews the results of the league.
About the only way round the rookie problem is to make your scenarios invitation only and invite those players who've discussed such via forums, private mail, or chats. The problem of that route is the number of active pilots here has fallen off considerably over the past year or so, and you may have trouble finding enough folks interested in the settings you desire.
