I think the grail is a game creation choice that puts all players in every plane, creating that many games.
I'd say I'm pretty new but still, most of my large games progress fine. I haven't had too many slow players at all. I don't know about only teaming with good players. I can honestly say, I have never even looked at who was on the other side. I usually select the best still available plane - like most do - then settle for what's left.
I was refering to your suggestion of a stat for "on winning side". A player who cares about that stat the most will make sure that they are only playing against newbies with good players on their team. I am describing those that plan to take advantage, not the general player. Just a point, not a complaint.
