The hex directly behind a two seater is a blind spot, so you can't shoot at a plane in that space.

Another point some folks miss about rear gunners, they are still able to shoot when their plane is on fire, unlike the main forward gun.

Regarding the rear gunner, the pilot likes the tail and rudder to stay in one piece. The plane flies better that way
