Have your friend to google for "The Northern Mariner" a Canadian website. There are short articles spanning various periods.
Two of my favorites articles are:
"The Capability of Sailing Warships Part 1: Windward Performance" by Sam Willis from "The Northern Mariner/Le marin du nord, XIII No.4,(October 2003), 29-39.
and
"The Capability of Sailing Warships Manoeuvrability" by Sam Willis from "The Northern Mariner/Le marin du nord, XIV No.3,(July 2004), 57-68.

Paolo,
Your friend may wish to consider the following -
> Sam Willis, mentioned in a previous reply, has written a book "Fighting at Sea in the Eighteenth Century - The Art of Sailing Warfare".
> John Harland's "Seamanship in the Age of Sail".
> Douglas's treatise on naval gunnery (free read on web) is also useful.
> A close reading of James's "Naval History of Great Britain" will also provide some valuable insights on tactics.
> Robison's "A History of Naval Tactics".

Thanks for this link, looks interesting. As for books. If you can find them (both published in the 1970s) for single ship duels or small battles: THE FRIGATES AN ACCOUNT OF THE LESSER WARSHIPS OF THE GREAT FRENCH WARS 1793-1815, by Janes Henderson (1970) SLOOPS AND BRIGS AN ACCOUNT OF THE SMALLEST VESSELS OF THE ROYAL NAVY DURING THE GREAT WARS 1793-1815, by James Henderson (1972) I hope it helps. |
