Didn't realize it worked that way.
I will select a longer time period for the automove the next time.
The bummer of it is that I was trying to introduce my nephew to the game.

A longer time period won't affect the issue you are describing, just how long before the first Automove.
Why didn't you stop making moves in order to give your nephew more time to get back online to rejoin the game? After each of his Automoves, you could have waited up to the 5 days before taking your move.
I guess I could have done that. Found out that he had lost his internet privileges, until his grades improve.
I'm curious though...
If I had waited, and the automover moved me, would it continue moving both of us, alternating every 30 seconds? (they were 2 player games).
