To answer your question, you can't leave the board. In the intro to the scenarios, it says if a ship voluntarily leaves and you can't shift the other ships so it stays on the board, no points are awarded. So hang out near the edge!
I don't think there were any specific end-of-game rules for multi-ship scenarios. Unless it has victory conditions in the scenario, we usually just played until we got tired or it was obvious who would win. You could also set a time or turn limit.
The online rules for this site were intentionally made to mirror the boardgame rules as much as possible. So while it's played in a browser and some things had to change for playability, all the mechanics and rules like movement, damage, modifiers, etc. are straight from the boardgame.
WSIM has two levels here: Simplified and Basic. The Simplified rules are a subset of the boardgame's basic rules and DON'T include drifting and grappling/melee. The Basic rules do. Some Advanced rules are being developed and tested now.
From the main page, look for the Wooden Ships section on the left. There is a "How to play" link. You can get to either version from there. While the guides are specific to this site, again, the rules they use are from the boardgame. There is also a Newbie's Guide for the beginners.
Hope that helps. Everyone in the WSIM community is pretty helpful and tolerant, so speak up if you have any questions.
