I wonder why rules gives choice when there is actually no gain in choosing guns

Carronades are now always hit first.

And I have difficulties picturing the gunners:"Mates, aim at the tiny little carronades first!"
Or, the other way around" "Mates, incoming cannonballs! Make sure to redirect them to our carronades."
