the only reason that i can think of for not firing is that there is one of the friendly ships within my fire arc even though it does not interfere with the line of sight to the enemy ships.....

Unfortunately, your ally (CdtWeasel) is in your firing arc and is slightly closer than the opposing ships. This will prevent you from choosing.

On the bright side, this same rule applies to your enemy. Otherwise, the Adamant would be raking your ship this turn
